Mike Phillips, jazz saxophonist, was in Houston one nite playing at Red Cat Jazz Cafe, and Charles Snider Show landed the exclusive interview! Watch him play then talk about his music, and working with Stevie Wonder and Prince! late nite tv talk show airs in Houston on Channel 17 csshow@gmail.com for more information.
look man you jazz purish seem to not want jazz to evolve at all, those saxophonist you mention are good, but you have to think about the younger generation, and what is popular among us younger musicians, people dont want to hear straight ahead and bebop as much as it was popular back then,
why so sensitive? i grew up listening to and imitating r&b saxophone players just like most of you young wipper snappers but now that i’m 127 years older i’ve discovered that there is more to the evolution of jazz than playing 5 notes over and over and over…did i mention over…my memory isn’t what it used to be…dumb ass!
This guy is great! I just recently saw him @ the Atlanta Jazz Fest on Memorial Day weekend & he was absolutely phenomenal! The whole band was on point…of course we can’t forget the GREATS but, this guy will definitely earn his spot among the best!
i preformed with him hes an amazing guy
jazz IS evolving. but playing R&B on a saxophone doesn’t make it “jazz”. It makes it R&B on the saxophone. check out chris potter, kenny garrett, steve wilson, bob reynolds, michael brecker, bill evans(sax),joshua redman, steve coleman, ravi coletrane, christopher hollyday…etc all great and innovative and relatively young. some play lots o notes others don’t. but the innovation is there. phillips may play well, but he’s not really innovating nor evolving.there’s nothing wrong with what he does
whats the song at the beggining
But you’re focusing on only 30 seconds of him playing. Have you ever heard him play Giant Steps ? Footprints ? So What ? A Night In Tunisia ? … I guess you haven’t, because you wouldn’t say the same thing after that. Michael Brecker even said that he was” Mike Phillips’s biggest fan”, word, go on his myspace if U don’t believe me.
someone tell Snider that “Bird” IS Charlie Parker hahaha
if you go down the list of names he mentioned, you’ll know that they came BEFORE kenny, steve, chris, etc. so the discussion was more of the ‘roots’ of jazz and not the ‘fruit’.
exactly
bonne prestation
Mike is not the only one bless with that gift, cuz I got the same thing going with me, if I think to much the problems come, I just let the music flow. lol when I played at the red cat a couple of moths ago I was doing the same thing looking around seeing the reactions on peoples face, it just egged me on to keep goin. it real the gift of music
I completely agree. This isn’t necessarily the case for Phillips because he does play jazz, but this is completely true for like 97% of “smooth jazz” players. Thanks rhumbaphone for making the point that so many just don’t get.
Mike Philly is the truth!
kennys music sounds like elevator music
kenny gs music sounds like elevator music
coolrats27 – the fact is! mike phillips at one point in time probably found himself going through kenny g to get to his place in music. your a damn fool !
Mike Philly and me are on the same page as it goes to performing seriously! He makes head to the “woodshed” to get it done! Awesome indeed!
some 1 should insert kenny g sax up his ass
Mike Philly is the TRUTH!

this is a really great interview….but MAN that interviewer is annoying!
plus he goes “Charlie Parker?” as if Mike forgot him… dude said bird after dizzy didn’t he? come on
mike is gonna be a legend someday
I’ve heard Mike Phillips mix Jay-Z tunes with Trane tunes and Chick Corea arranged for soli… I like chris potter though.
You wanna hear innovative? Listen to Allan Holdsworth. But he’s probably too innovative for your ears.
i like allan holdsworth too. check out david binney.
