web.newsguy.com I prepared the bass and drums before recording. The piano was improvised using a leadsheet only (go to www.bushgrafts.com for leadsheet, video and a midi file recorded at the same time). There is a much better video version with extra and clearer view of the notes being played – and a pdf transcription of the piano part on my DVD – see the above site for details
A transcription and enhanced version of this with clear piano view and also naotation is available at web.newsguy.com This is a version of this great Ellington song. It begins with a rubato intro, then sequenced bass and drums that I recorded some time ago were used again as backing to the improvised piano. There is another version of this at home.wanadoo.nl with the same drum and bass backing in midi format
Go to www.youtube.com for a much improved version in HD and Widescreen. Another experiment – this time, I took a jazz trio midi file that I had previously done, and annotated with text comments. Lots of students learn ‘Autumn Leaves’ as one of the first standards they play, so I thought that this might be a useful source of ideas. It is in the fake book key, and the chord symbols appear above the music. This was imported into the Band in a Box program – this program will read these text ‘markers’, and it also has quite a flexible notation view. Note that in the notation view the bass and treble clefs don’t accurately reflect the Left and Right hand parts. In addition, for those who can’t easily sight read music, there is a very big and clear Piano view. I hope that some students might find this useful. I have produced lots of other jazz midi files at home.wanadoo.nl that can be treated in a similar way. A much better quality video is at www.bushgrafts.com along with along with a PDF file of the Transcription and a leadsheet and the midi file if you want to try to do thisyourself! If you have a fast connection and want to see this in high quality video to see the notes clearly(and the audio in stereo), add the letters &fmt=18 straight after the existing internet address line above.
