thats sick!
wow…it’s wonderfull…and i think coffin is a good musician..because he like improvisasi model in saxophone…i like this…
sick.
So sick.
VERRY sick Live.
I went insane when i saw him do this at the show i went to this summer. Unbelievable
ho-ly-shit.
I love Jeff but I think he should play one sax at a time and perfect it. He still needs to adjust his style when playing with his new extended family Dave Matthews Band. (This is coming from love, Jeff)
Roi did play for show but for the ‘music’. He quieted himself (his movements) went inside himself, you might call it the ‘zone’ and played from the pool of ‘grux’ (that place in the cosmos that sent him impromtu melodies & a variety of improvs). I doubt you can reach it by displaying your ability to perform on two instruments at one time. It’s too showy. Too ego driven. Roi didn’t play from the ego, he played from his spirit. YOu can tell just by watching him. You can do it too. Peace.
I doubt anything Jeff Coffin does is ego driven. The double saxophone thing is probably his rashaan roland kirk influence. Also I don’t think Jeff should adjust his playing for when he’s playing DMB because then he’s not Jeff and I’m sorry but Jeff takes the cake over Leroi any day of the week. But thats just my opinion.
Actually, I meant to say that “Roi DIDN’T play for show…”
I disagree whole heartedly. LeRoi is a rare being. His playing leaves me in awe. Whereas, I’m still wondering why the band chose Jeff. Don’t get me wrong Jeff may be great and all but up to now, he’s just a rebound kind of guy. I think he won his position by default and I’m still waiting to be impressed. LeRoi was ‘Grux’. Jeff well, he’s Jeff. (I guess it depends on taste.) My father was a Jazz musician and we had music in our house hold so I’ve heard some good music. Roi=Good.
Well what if both Leroy and Jeff play from their heart and souls? Wouldn’t the outcome be different because they have lived different lives? just because one player may come off as “showy” to you doesn’t mean they aren’t playing from their heart and spirit.
It seems we come from opposite ends of the spectrum. Leroi’s playing has never left me in awe. He is iconic in his sound that he leaves behind on all the DMB records he’s on but he has never moved me in an emotional way. just my opinion
Okay, I’ll accept that. I’ll accept that Jeff plays from his heart too. He’s a musician and they tend to do so. So let’s just agree to have our favorites. Peace and blessings.
I wish you the same
DMB is a simple music, compare with the flecktones, jeff is best musician in the band…
@joshyoda With all due respect, Carter Beauford is the best musician in DMB. But Coffin is not far behind. And DMB’s music is not “simple.” Some songs maybe, but that is a misnomer for most of their music.
Jeff plays a fabulous sax solo on #41 of the Live Trax 1 CD, when he was a DMB guest in that particular concert. He never repeated such a deep sensitive solo like that, unfortunately, but he showed is capable of. Great musician, great guy, I had the opportunity to meet him in person. No ego whatsoever.
you cant really compare roi and jeff…they play completely different from one another…roi was pretty much 100% soul smooth warm playing that gave everyone goosebumps, jeff is more hard sharp crazy riff playing…i think both of them are 2 of the best musicians around, but you can’t really compare the 2 playing styles to say who was better, its all about what you like more. like personally, i can’t sit and listen to 20 minutes of the flecktones, but i could sit and listen 4 DMB albums
thumbs up to that
agreed carter is by far the most advanced out of all of them
i have met jeff before and went to a clinic of his. he showed me how to do a lot of things on saxophone. how to get an amazing sound outta 2 saxophones like that was one of them; HOWEVER. i am still trying to get that accomplished. i hope to be as good as him one day!!
I just learned how to do this… It’s hard as hell. But frankly, you feel like a GOD.
ive never tried this and i will now
Great Double Sax Playing, as with the sax player from Maldita Vecindad.
