It was introduced by Libby Holman in the revue Three’s A Crowd and used as a soundtrack theme in the 1947 film named for the song. “Body and Soul” became a jazz standard, with hundreds of versions performed and recorded by dozens of artists. The most famous of these is the take recorded by Coleman Hawkins and His Orchestra on October 11, 1939 at their only recording session for Bluebird, a subsidiary of RCA Victor. Hawkins’ solo on this take is considered to be “one of the finest examples of pure, spontaneous creative artistry in the history of jazz.”[citation needed] It was one of the first straight jazz records (as against swing) to become a commercial hit. This was unusual, as the song’s melody is never directly stated in the recording; saxophonist Hawkins two-choruses’ worth of improvisation on the tune’s chord progression constitute almost the entire take.[1] In 2004, it was one of 50 recordings chosen that year by the

This is the duet version (written for four hands). This is the original version of sheet music as composed by Hoagy Carmichael in the late 1930s (not a modified/arranged/easy version). Note it is rather different then the common version you’ve always heard played in scale C. As an amateur player, I made every attempt to play this accurately – with no changes to the sheet music on my part. I tried to play all embellishments accurately (accents, crescendos, loudness/softness symbols, etc). In the beginning, I had problems getting the tempo/speed consistent. I finally used a Dr. Beat metronome set to 130bpm to get a consistent tempo on the chord pattern – which should be very accurate. I opted not to play the entire piece twice per the “repeat” symbol near the end. Obviously, I couldn’t play all four hands at the same time. The chord pattern was recorded into my digital piano’s memory – then the melody was played during the video. The piano is a Yamaha P120. The sound for this video was recorded directly

I’m playing this by ear. I tried to make it sound as close to the original as possible. I am NOT a Twilight fan, but I do think this piece sounds pretty on the piano. Also, you can download an mp3 of my version here (right click and save) – theheartrender.webs.com ABOUT THE BIG CHORDS: I can only reach 9ths, not 10ths, so I can’t play the chords exactly like they are in my sheet music, I just try to make it sound *close* to what it should be like. If you can reach the 10ths, excellent, play it like it is written. But I know some of you have also had this problem where you can’t reach the chords. What you can do is play the first chord (the 9th, which most people should be able to reach) and hold down the bass note of that with the pedal. Then when you play the 10th, keep the bass note held from the chord before that, and DON’T re-play that bass note, just play the upper two notes, which should only be a span of a 6th. If you can’t reach the 9th, then you can leave off the bottom note. All right, enough notes… enjoy the music & God bless!!
